How to use the Shangri-La Circle Earn Calculator

Cash Currency

Select the currency used by the hotel — for example, if you are staying at a hotel in Hong Kong, select Hong Kong Dollars (HKD). The currency will be converted to USD for the points calculation. The actual exchange rate used by Shangri-La may differ from the rate used here, resulting in a small difference in estimated points.

Total Cash (excl. Tax)

Enter the total stay cost excluding taxes and fees, as shown on the hotel booking site or final invoice. Shangri-La Circle points are not earned on taxes and fees.

Total Cash (incl. Tax)

Enter the total stay cost including taxes and fees. This field is used for the return-on-spend calculation.

Points Required

Enter the number of Shangri-La Circle points required for your stay.

Status

Select your Shangri-La Circle membership tier. All members earn a base rate of 1 point per $1 spent. Your status adds a percentage bonus on top of the base points:
Gold — Entry level upon joining; no bonus on base points.
Jade — Adds a 25% bonus. Earned after 20 qualifying nights or 6,000 tier points in a year.
Diamond — Adds a 50% bonus. Earned after 50 qualifying nights or 15,000 tier points in a year.
Polaris — Adds a 50% bonus (same as Diamond). This is an invitation-only tier with additional non-points benefits.
The bonus applies to base hotel points only — promo points are not multiplied.

Offers

Active Shangri-La Circle promotions are listed here. Check any offer that applies to your stay. Deadlines and stay windows are shown where applicable. Select the Custom Offer option to enter a new or targeted offer. You can choose from a fixed amount of bonus points per stay, per night, or a multiplier of the total base points.

Nights

This field only appears when needed to calculate points from an offer that is based on nights stayed.

Extra Points

Use this field for any additional points not covered by the other fields.

Earn As

Shangri-La Circle lets you choose to earn airline miles instead of Circle points on each stay. If you select an airline partner, you will receive a flat amount of miles per stay (not per dollar or per night). The amount varies by partner. To earn airline miles, present your airline membership card at check-in. Select Shangri-La Circle Points to earn Circle points based on your spend instead.

Point Value

The default of 6.67¢ per point is based on the program’s fixed redemption rate of 15 points = $1 USD. When earning as airline miles, a separate point value field appears for the selected airline currency.

Points + Cash

Shangri-La Circle lets you part-pay an award with points and settle the rest in cash, so you can book even when your balance will not cover the whole stay. Enter the points and cash portions here to cost that hybrid against a full cash stay and a full award. A minimum of 500 points must go into the points half — below that the booking is not available, and the calculator flags it on the results card. Both fields are optional; leave them blank and the comparison shows cash vs. full award only.

Because Circle points redeem at a flat 15 points per $1, the split is close to linear: every 15 points you add takes about $1 off the cash side. There is no discount for tipping the balance one way or the other, so the choice is really about how much of your balance you want to spend rather than about finding a sweet spot.

Buy Points

Use this when you would buy points to cover the award — either because your balance is short, or because a points sale is cheaper than paying the cash rate. Enter the price you would pay per point, in cents. If a sale is running, use the sale price. Purchase prices are always in US cents, like the point value below, because points are sold in dollars regardless of the currency your hotel quotes.

The second field is how many points you already hold. It starts filled with the full award, meaning you have enough and are buying nothing — so the comparison you get by default is the ordinary one, points against cash, with no purchase in it. Edit it down to the balance you actually have and the calculator buys only the shortfall. Enter 0 to cost buying the whole award, which is what you want when weighing up a sale purely to book one stay. Clear the field and it goes back to tracking the award total.

Points that come out of your existing balance are costed at their redemption value (the Point Value field below), because spending them means giving up that value. Points you have to buy are costed at what you actually pay in cash.

Purchase rules: Points are sold in blocks of 50 — the calculator rounds your purchase up to the next whole block and credits any leftover points back at their redemption value. No tax or processing charge is added on top of the purchase price. Purchases are capped at 10,000 points per calendar year. If a stay needs more than that, the calculator flags it and costs the excess against your existing balance.

The award card then shows a break-even price: the price per point at which buying the points and booking the award costs exactly the same as paying cash. Below that price, buying wins; above it, pay cash. When the award can never beat cash whatever the points cost, the card says so instead.

Two things the calculator cannot check for you: purchased points generally do not count toward elite status or tier qualification, and in some programs they cannot be transferred to partners. Read the terms of the sale before buying.

Buying Shangri-La Circle Points

Shangri-La sells points at a flat USD 0.13 per point — there is no bonus or discount structure, and no sliding scale by purchase size. The checkout price is the whole price: a test purchase of 50 points came to exactly USD 6.50 with no tax or processing charge added. Shangri-La’s terms note that the price excludes any GST/HST/VAT that may apply, so a purchaser in a jurisdiction that levies it could see tax added at the payment page.

The purchase slider moves in steps of 50 points at the low end and 100 points higher up, so the calculator rounds your purchase up to the next multiple of 50. The annual cap is 10,000 points per calendar year — low compared with other programs, and worth checking against the award you are costing: 10,000 points covers about USD 667 of room rate at the fixed 15 points = $1 rate. Purchased points are credited within 72 hours, so they are not an option for a same-day booking.

Buying points is never cheaper than paying cash here. Because redemption is locked at 15 points per $1, every point you buy is worth exactly 6.67¢ against a room rate but costs 13¢ — so a bought point returns about half what it cost. There is no award chart to find outsized value in, and Shangri-La does not run points sales, so there is no discounted price to change that arithmetic. The break-even figure on the award card will always sit below the purchase price for this program. The realistic use is topping up a balance that is a few hundred points short of an award you want to book, where the alternative is losing the redemption entirely.

Two restrictions that matter for this chain in particular: purchased points may only be used for Shangri-La’s own Redemption Awards — they cannot be converted into airline miles or any partner currency, so the conversion options in the Earn As dropdown do not apply to them — and they do not count toward tier status. Purchased points are non-refundable and carry no cash value.

Comparison Results

After clicking Compare, three cards show the effective cost of each option. Cash shows your out-of-pocket cost minus the value of points you would earn. Points shows the dollar equivalent of the points you would spend, valued at the Point Value field — 6.67¢ by default, which is the program’s fixed 15 points = $1 rate. Points + Cash combines the cash paid with the dollar value of the points used. The option with the lowest net cost is marked “Best value.” Because Shangri-La points have a fixed redemption value, the comparison essentially shows whether the points you earn on a cash stay are worth more or less than the points you would spend on a points stay.

Not Included in the Calculator

Dining and spa earning: Shangri-La Circle points can also be earned on eligible dining and spa spend at participating hotels. These on-property earning categories are not included — the calculator only estimates points earned on room rates.

Point conversions to miles: In addition to the per-stay airline mile option above, Circle points can also be converted to airline miles after earning (generally at a 1:1 ratio, minimum 1,000 points). This post-earning conversion is not modelled in the calculator.
